Electoral law Candidate lists, for the elections to the national parliament, European parliament and local governments, shall be composed in a way such as to promote a minimum representation of 33 percent of each sex (Decree 72).Exempted from the regulations are towns with less than 750 votes, and municipalities with less than 7500 voters (Decree 72, Article 2 [4]).
Legal sanctions for non-compliance: Electoral law If a list does not comply with the quota law, the incorrectness is to be made public and there will be financial sanctions in relation to the level of inequality on lists (Decree 72, Article 7).The financial sanction does not apply to lists with less than three names (Decree 72, Article 7 [2]).
Rank order/placement rules: Electoral law In multi-member constituencies, the lists can not have more than two consecutive names of the same sex (Decree 72, Article 2 [2]).

Additional information

In 1999 the parliament rejected two proposals by the Socialist Party arguing for a fixed number of candidates of each sex on party nominations.
 

In 2006, the Law Governing Political Parties, article 29, was amended to ensure gender equality in parties as well.
