Electoral law According to the Electoral Law Nº 026,2010, Article 11,paragraph a, the number of candidates in the lists for the elections for the “Chamber of Deputies” must be divided equally between men and women.
Legal sanctions for non-compliance: Electoral law According to the Electoral Law Nº 026, 2010, Article 107, the candidate lists which do not comply with the gender quota provisions will not be admitted. The political party, whose list is rejected, will have 72 hours to comply.
Rank order/placement rules: Electoral Law According to the Electoral Law Nº 026,2010, Article 11,paragraph a, the names of men and women candidates in the lists must appear alternatively starting with a woman’s name for the candidates and with a man’s name for the alternates. In the cases that only one candidate is elected, equality and alternation is also applied to the candidate lists with a 50% of the candidates (not alternates) being women (paragraph b).

National Unity Front UN Unidad Nacional In Article 31 of its founding statutes from 2003, UN writes that women shall be represented by 50 percent at all levels of the party structures, including candidate lists. This has not always been put into practice.

In 2001 the Election Law was changed: Article 112 requires that candidate lists to the Lower House (Cámara de Diputados) must include at least one woman out of every three candidates (only in the PR-part of the election). 

A quota law for national election was first introduced in 1997.
